About me

​An architect by profession &  trained in the Carnatic style of singing, Shakthisree Gopalan's musical influences are varied and draw their roots from jazz, RnB, trip hop, easy listening to rock and psychedelic rock. Her biggest inspirations and influences are A R Rahman,  Nina Simone, Norah Jones, U2, Alexi Murdoch, Bon Iver, Coldplay and John Mayer.


With a love to experiment with music, Shakthi has been writing songs since 2007 & has been releasing her original music online.

Formerly associated with the Chennai based rock band 'Off the Record', she has also been doing playback, her most recent releases being the Title track of the Yash Raj Film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' & 'Nenjukulle' from the upcoming Mani Ratnam Movie 'Kadal', both composed by Mr A.R. Rahman. The latter growing exponentially in popularity, thanks to the MTV Unplugged launch.

 

She has been a recording artist as a Playback Singer for the Indian Film Music Industry since July 2008, working on playback and backing for various movies in Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. She had the wonderful opportunity to record vocals for the theme song for the Chennai Sangamam Festival 2009- "Kaaveri" composed by notable musician and composer, Paul Jacob and was awarded the best female playback singer Debutant award twice in the year 2008.



Apart from being an independent artist, Shakthi is currently associated with The Pyjama Conspiracy: 4 piece set up based in Chennai which has been exploring with easy listening and acoustic sounds and has been moving into more experimental elements and sounds in recent times. Collaborations with various bands and artists over the years has seen Shakthi perform at several shows at various popular events and music festivals, in and out of Chennai.



Shakthi enjoys surrealist and pop art in all its varied forms. She loves to muse in her writings and her lyrics about people and human emotions and has always been fascinated with dreams and everything that has anything to do with them. She loves to sketch and paint and enjoys making birthday cards and caricatures for dear friends. She is also an avid Youtube surfer and loves sharing random Youtube videos with friends.

Currently working on a few projects in collaboration with some wonderful musicians and amazing friends, Shakthi is looking forward to releasing some of her own material in the coming weeks.
